A few of the anglers toughing out the tremendous wind conditions on Friday and Saturday were rewarded with some nice walleyes.  The fish are hard to come by, but when you get on them they are nice!  Jigs and minnows close to shore remains the dominant technique in catching the walleyes that are averaging about 2.5 pounds each.  One boat Saturday evening caught 4 nice walleyes with three of them over 21 inches!

North seems to be the favorite place to go with boats concentrating on the Hartford Beach area up to SoDak Supper Club and onto Cameron's pasture.  Strong north to northwest winds Friday and early Saturday sent several boats to the rearing ponds area to fish, but little success was reported. As cabin owners start to show up for the season, they are reporting getting 2-3 walleyes off their docks in the evening hours. Between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. seems the ideal time.  A weighted crappie rig tipped with a minnow worked well in the windy conditions. This is pretty common for spring walleye fishing on Big Stone.

A small 43 boat tournament was held Saturday with 20 teams catching at least one fish.  The top two places each had 5 walleye with weights of 15.44 (3 pound average) and 12.28 (2.45 pound average) respectively. The water temps are hovering about 47 degrees and most think the spawn is close to being done.  Many of the walleyes being caught are males with very few females being seen.

As the weather stabilizes and the spawn finishes up the walleyes will be ready to feed again and then we can set the hook!  Don't be one of the anglers that wishes he was here yesterday...
